Here Chief Constable Giles York and Deputy Chief Constable Bernie O'Reilly mark the launch of the UK Police Memorial Trust's public fundraising campaign to help raise funds to build the new UK Police Memorial at the National Arboretum in Staffordshire.
The memorial at the National Arboretum will be a landscaped remembrance garden where the country can honour and commemorate all those from our police service who have died in the line of duty and where their family, friends and colleagues can reflect and come together.
Chief Constable Giles York said: "This is our opportunity to show our support for our fallen colleagues. I am moved that our officers and staff are going to be commemorated at the new National Police Memorial at the arboretum. This will be truly representative of the courage and sacrifice which is displayed by our officers and staff every day. This will be a wonderful place where families, friends and colleagues can come together to reflect and remember their loved ones.
"I encourage anyone who wishes to be involved in fund raising or would like to donate for this worthy cause.”
The trust will also help to provide an all-important fund that will support the families of officers and staff who have been killed on duty. In addition to this, there will also be a digital memorial that uses the latest technology to honour and tribute all those who have died in service, this can be accessed from across the world.
A programme will also be developed for schools and colleges to inform pupils and students about the history of our police service and the part it plays in today’s society.
